Know the facts about Spa
Spas
Spa, as we know today, is a sanctum of rejuvenation, relaxation and a world of healing. It originated in the period of ancient Greeks where baths were built near natural hot springs or volcanoes. Greek elites and celebrities would often meet at these hot springs to treat physical ailments and have conversations. These social baths known as Laconica, later showed way to mineral and thermal baths around 500 B.C. Years later, the concept gained popularity in the Roman Empire. As medicinal properties of thermal water were discovered, legionnaires from war would through at the springs to treat their aches, ailments and wounds. This practice encouraged building baths, called Aquae, at the spring areas. The hot water treatments undertaken there came to be known as Sanus Per Aquam (SPA), which means, healing through water. The first Roman Thermae, a large scale spa, was built under the rule of Emperor Agrippa.
With time, Thermae evolved with multiple features that included both bathing and other types of healing and spread within the Roman Empire including areas from Africa to England. This period saw the transformation of Thermae from being just a healing centre to a resort that included facilities like complexes, various types of baths, sports centre and restaurants. It is believed, that after exercising in the fitness room, rituals included going into warmer rooms, where the body was bathed, massaged and exfoliated, culminating with a refreshing dip in the Frigidarium, followed by relaxation in specially appointed rooms. It was during this period, that the town spa was established in Belgium, to provide various bathing and healing services, reaching its peak of fame in the 14th century. The spa town exists even today.
Even in England, the waters of Bath were used for healing purposes from about 800 B.C. and the use of the medicinal properties of water was common with the British royalty well into the 20th century. It is believed by some historians that around 1589, Queen Elizabeth insisted on bathing in thermal waters at least once a month, whether she needed it or not. Five baths were established within the town, including the King’s Bath and Cross Bath. Even today, the waters of these Baths remain heated at 120 degrees Fahrenheit and generate over one million gallons of mineral water per day, containing over thirty minerals like calcium, sulphur, potassium and magnesium.
Besides the Roman Empire, spa was evolving in other parts of the world too. Japan’s Onses (hot spring) gave birth to their spa traditions. Though the first Onses area, near Lzumo, was recognized as a public thermal area in 737 A.D., it took almost centuries for the Japanese to build the first Ryoken (inns) where food, accommodation, Zen gardens, outdoor and indoor baths were provided under one roof to the guests. Further, about 300 years later, the ritual of sweating in sauna and plunging in icy lakes, complemented with drinks such as beer or vodka, become popular in Finland. The Outomans lso become famous for their Hammams that were beautifully constructed with mosaic. The trend started after building of Baths of Roxelana in 16th century. Including massive towering steam rooms, private washing quarters and massage platforms. Besides being a health centre, Roxelana become an important place for socializing.
Spa traditions spread their wings in Europe too where spa were located around the natural hot springs. It is important to note that in the Renaissance era, many resorts that become popular baths and healing places were built around thermal springs, such as Charlemagne’s Aachen and Bonaventura’s Poretta in Western Europe, Paracelsus’ mountain mineral springs at paeffers in Switzerland, Baden-Baden in Germany and towns like spa in Belgium. As time passed, the spa culture become even more popular across Europe and the original use of the mineral water was developed to a wide range of other therapies such as Thalassotherapy (including sea water and marine substances). The 19th century saw the spa culture flourishing when many wealthy people took holidays to enjoy spa vacations and thus restore energy. The original concept is prevalent even today with Hydrotherapy as an important feature of spas. A major role in carrying spa tradition forward also goes to Sebastian Kneipp, the father of the renowned Kneipp Therapy as he developed various holistic herbal and water therapies in the village of Bad Worishofen around 1890
Spa tradition could be witnessed in Germany too where a combination of Climatology, Balneology and natural therapies were used as a part of the German Cure System. Even today, it is a supportive system to the National Health System of Germany and is used by doctors to prescribe a natural treatment when the other medical methods do not work effectively.
Americans too were not untouched with the magical properties and benefits of thermal water. Native Americans enjoyed the health benefits of natural springs even before European settlers arrived in the New World. In many instances, natural springs were used for magical and religious purposes as well as for hygiene. One of the oldest spas in North American colonies is believed to have been in Berkeley Springs (later known as Warm Springs) of West Virginia. It was towards the end of the 18th century, when spas went through a downturn with the closing of public baths across Europe because of the spread of plague. To prevent Syphilis Epidemic, baths in France were destroyed too.
Today the spa is an interesting combination of ancient traditions and modern mechanical wonders. Modern spas, though having undergone a paradigm shift in their treatment procedures, still retain water therapy as their nucleus, and follow a reutine of cleaning, heating, treatment and rest, akin to the older counterparts. Today’s spa ritual is very similar to the spa ritual used at the Roman thermae. According to Prof. De Vierville, the proper sequence of a typical spa ritual is cleaning, heating, treatment and rest. The first step, cleaning, means a shower to purify the body. The second step is to warm up the body using heated.
Whirlpools, saunas or steam rooms. However, this step should be eliminated for people with certain medical conditions. The third step is getting the treatment, like a body scrub and massage. The last and equally important step is rest. Spa treatments can range from wet and dry treatments to wellness therapies and beauty treatments.
Treatments at spa include Thalassotherapy, Meditation, Yoga, Ayurveda, Flotation therapy, Watsu, Wassertanzen, Water dance, Liquid sound, Swedish massage, Japanese Shiatsu, Thai massage, European facials, Acupuncture, Dead Sea salt scrubs, Moor Mud wraps, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Microdermabrasion, Endermologie, Reiki, Aura imaging, Rhassoul, Hypnotherapy, Tai Chi, Dream therapy and much more.
Mechanical devices such as Jacuzzi, whirlpools, Hydrotherapy tubs, Swiss showers, Scotch hoses and Vichy showers have been developed to assist in the performance of these therapies efficiently. These devices have collectively made the spa experience a better one. Today’s spa has successfully stuck to its core traditions, simultaneously innovating and developing them in their own way.
